On Friday 26 June Waiouru school joined in the Ruapehu Schools’ celebration of Puanga, the beginning of the Maori New Year, at Maungarongo Marae in Ohakune. The day began with a powhiri at 8:45 am, and workshops including a powerpoint presentation, a Starlab experience, and art activities.
The powerpoint presentation delivered by staff from Whanganui Museum explained to the children the history of Puanga, its relationship to Matariki and other constellations. For many children the Starlab was the highlight of the day, pointing out the positions of the stars and bringing it to life for them. They also enjoyed painting rocks and looking at the variety of art displayed from other schools.
A hangi was provided for lunch with live entertainment from the Deziah Dance Academy in Auckland. This was an added bonus that complimented our Performing Arts focus this term.
